The Richest of the Rich
"Lore" is the knowledge handed down through generations of Laphroaig distillery managers, blenders and craftspeople — and this bottling, introduced in 2016 as a permanent addition to the range, is Distillery Manager John Campbell's tribute to them. He called it "the richest of the rich": a marriage drawing on some of the most precious whiskies in the distillery's Atlantic storehouse, reaching back through the traditions of Ian Hunter, who pioneered ex-bourbon cask maturation in the 1920s, and Bessie Williamson after him. It was named Best No Age Statement Scotch in Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2019. Set it beside the flagship Laphroaig 10 Year Old or explore the range on the Laphroaig vendor page.
Tasting Notes
Per the producer: a full sparkling gold colour; a nose of pungent peat smoke and seaside minerals with ash and a hint of chocolate; a richly peaty palate with bitter chocolate, ash and a spicy chilli bite; and a short, dry finish with a long, lingering sweet aftertaste.
How to Enjoy
Neat, with time in the glass — the smoke and chilli bite soften into that long sweet aftertaste. A few drops of water open the chocolate and mineral side. More Islay firepower is in our Scotch whisky collection.
