Don Amado Mezcal Largo is a single-varietal joven mezcal — 46% ABV (92 proof), 750mL, made from 100% Largo agave (Agave karwinskii) grown at 4,800 feet in Santa Catarina Minas, Oaxaca, and double distilled in ceramic clay pots in the same town. Unaged, it shows the tall, trunk-forming Karwinskii family at its most elegant. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

The Tree-Trunk Agave of the Karwinskii

Largo earns its name honestly: where most agaves hug the ground, this Karwinskii grows an elongated, trunk-like heart that takes ten to fourteen years to mature and stands over the Oaxacan hillsides like a spiky desert tree. Both the piñas and lengths of trunk go into the roast at Don Amado, where the Arellanes family cooks them four days in earthen pits, ferments the crushed agave with its fibre in pine vats, and distils twice in the ceramic pots Santa Catarina Minas is famous for. Compare it with its sibling bottlings in our mezcal range, explore the broader tequila and mezcal collection, or see the house on the Don Amado vendor page.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Soft smoke over rich cooked agave and candied fruit. Palate: Creamy and bright — cooked maguey sweetness, subtle baking spice and a clean, green freshness. Finish: Long and clean, like the air after desert rain.

How to Enjoy

Neat, at room temperature, in small pours — Largo's creamy texture is the point, and chilling mutes it. It is also a beautiful base for a stirred mezcal Martini-style serve with a saline edge.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Largo agave? A variety of Agave karwinskii named for its long, trunk-like form. It matures over 10–14 years in Oaxaca's highlands, and both its hearts and trunks are roasted for mezcal.

How is Largo different from Arroqueno? They are different agave families: Largo is a Karwinskii — lean, green and creamy — while Arroqueno is a giant Agave americana, fruitier and more floral. Don Amado bottles each on its own so the contrast shows.

Is this mezcal aged? No — it is a joven, bottled unaged at 46% ABV straight from the clay-pot distillation and reduction.
