Allagash Brewing James & Julie Sour Brown Ale is a 6.9% ABV Flemish sour brown (Flanders Oud Bruin) from Allagash Brewing Company of Portland, Maine. Brewed with Pilsner, Munich, Special B, flaked maize, chocolate malt and Caramel 45, fermented with Allagash's house yeast strain, then aged TWO YEARS on stainless steel with the brewery's own blend of Lactobacillus and Pediococcus cultures — no oak, just time and bugs. Mahogany in color, medium-bodied, finishing with clean acidity and a hint of spice. A 375mL (12.7oz) corked-and-caged bottle. Shop American sour beer online at Del Mesa Liquor, San Diego, CA.

Two Years on Steel, Not Oak

Most sour browns pick up their character in wood; James & Julie gets its depth from a two-year stainless rest on Allagash's house souring cultures — the brewery's own Lactobacillus and Pediococcus blend. The malt bill does the rest: Special B and chocolate malt for raisin, fig and caramelized sugar, Mt. Hood hops staying out of the way. Tasting Notes

Brewery notes: aromas of raisins, figs, cherries and caramelized sugar. Palate: mahogany malt depth — dried fruit, toffee, clean lactic acidity. Finish: dry, lightly spiced, refreshing.

How to Enjoy

Serve at 50–55°F in a tulip or goblet. Pair with beef carbonnade, aged cheddar or chocolate desserts — the classic Flanders food matches translate directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is James & Julie oak-aged? No — it's aged two years on stainless steel with souring cultures. The depth comes from the malt bill and time, not wood.

Who are James and Julie? Two people associated with the brewery — the brewery hasn't officially documented their identities.

What does an oud bruin taste like? Malt-driven sourness: raisin, fig and cherry over caramel and toffee, finishing dry — the maltier cousin of the Flanders red.
