Viva Mexico Blanco Tequila is the Vivanco family's own blanco from Destileria El Ranchito (NOM 1414) in Arandas, in the Los Altos highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. The family has grown agave in Arandas since 1929 and founded El Ranchito in 1994, spending most of the next thirty years distilling under contract for other brands, so the house label was nearly impossible to find in the United States until recently. Made under maestro tequilero Sergio Cruz from 100% estate-grown Blue Weber agave matured six to eight years on the family's ranchos at about 6,600 feet, it is roasted 48 to 50 hours in brick ovens, crushed on a roller mill, open-fermented five to eight days in stainless steel with proprietary and champagne yeasts and deep well water while classical music plays — the family's "Mozart method" — then distilled twice in copper pot stills and bottled unaged at 40% ABV (80 proof) in a 750mL bottle. Kosher certified and additive-free. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

A Highlands House Label, At Last

NOM 1414 is one of the most respected addresses in tequila — the Vivanco family's fabrica has quietly made spirit for celebrated brands for decades. Viva Mexico is the family's own name on the bottle: highlands agave grown at altitude for sweetness and fruit, slow brick-oven cooking, and the much-talked-about Mozart method, in which classical music plays to the fermenting mosto. Tasting Notes

The producer and importer describe tropical fruit — guava, peach and dragonfruit — with lemongrass, fennel and menthol on the nose, over the family's own tasting sheet notes of peach, green guava, lime, grapefruit, mint and olive. The palate is dense, silky and oily: cooked agave, parsnip, orange peel, vanilla and white pepper, finishing with a slate-like mineral saltiness and a sweet cooked-agave close.

How to Enjoy

Sip it neat to taste the highlands agave at full clarity, or build a Margarita that actually tastes like agave. It is equally at home in a Ranch Water or a Paloma. Browse the wider spirits shelf and gift sets at Del Mesa for more agave picks.
