Michter's Barrel Strength Sour Mash Whiskey 2026 is the first barrel strength release of Michter's US*1 Sour Mash — the whiskey that in 2019 became the first American whiskey ever named “Whisky of the Year” by The Whisky Exchange. It is bottled uncut at barrel strength: the batches in this 2026 release ranged from 110.4 to 112.6 proof (averaging 111.5 proof, 55.75% ABV), and each batch is bottled at its own particular alcohol level, so no single proof is printed for the expression. 750ml, distilled and bottled in Louisville, Kentucky.

The First Barrel Strength Sour Mash

During the 1970s and 1980s, Michter's Original Sour Mash was the Pennsylvania distillery's single most popular product, before disappearing from the market in 1989. Revived in Kentucky in 2012, the US*1 Sour Mash went on to make history in 2019 — and in 2026 Michter's released it at barrel strength for the first time. “The Michter's US*1 Sour Mash that we make in Kentucky these days is a wonderful whiskey, and we're excited to have this opportunity to share it at barrel strength,” said Michter's President Joseph J. Magliocco. Explore the full range in our Michter's collection.

The Sour Mash Method

Sour mash is a production method, not a flavor: some previously fermented mash is used as the starter for the new mash to be fermented, much like making sourdough bread. Michter's unique grain selection means this whiskey cannot be categorized as a bourbon or a rye — it strikes a balance between the two. It is distilled to Master Distiller Dan McKee's exacting specifications according to Michter's classic sour mash method, matured in toasted and fire-charred new American white oak barrels, and held until Master of Maturation Andrea Wilson and the Michter's tasting panel deem it ready. The batch is then bottled uncut at barrel strength and further mellowed by Michter's signature filtration.

Tasting Notes

All the beauty of the classic sour mash, at full strength: an enchantingly sweet aromatic entry, transitioning from subtle to intense notes of cherries, plums, and powdered cocoa, rounding out with a nicely balanced spice that complements the whiskey's dessert-like honey character. Master Distiller Dan McKee points to delicious notes of toffee and stone fruit — rich, never sour.

Frequently Asked Questions

What proof is Michter's Barrel Strength Sour Mash? It is bottled uncut, and each batch is bottled at its particular alcohol level. The batches offered in this 2026 release ranged from 110.4 to 112.6 proof, averaging 111.5 proof (55.75% ABV) — your bottle's batch proof is printed on its label.

How is it different from the regular Michter's Sour Mash? Same whiskey, same sour mash method and grain selection — but where the standard Michter's Sour Mash Whiskey is bottled at 86 proof, this release is left uncut at barrel strength (with Michter's signature filtration), for a considerably richer, more concentrated pour.

Is it a bourbon or a rye? Neither. Its unique grain selection falls between the two legal categories, which is precisely the point — it opens with bourbon-like sweetness and finishes with rye-like spice. See more in our American whiskey collection.

Is the mash bill published? No. Michter's keeps its grain selection proprietary; what defines the whiskey is the sour mash process, the low 103-proof barrel entry, and maturation in toasted and fire-charred new American white oak.
