Mainland Louisiana 11 Year Old Rum Superlative Spirits Single Barrel Selection
Mainland Louisiana 11 Year Old Rum Superlative Spirits Single Barrel Selection is a single-barrel American rum from Mainland Rum, the independent bottler founded by Seth Benhaim (Broken Barrel Whiskey, Infuse Spirits), selected by Superlative Spirits and bottled at barrel proof, 65.2% ABV (130.4 proof), in a 750mL bottle. Distilled in 2014 in Louisiana from molasses and cane sugar and aged eleven years in a small 15-gallon ex-rye cask, it yielded just 64 bottles — bottled as-is, with no blending, dilution, added sugar, coloring or chill filtration. American Rum, Bottled Like Single-Cask Scotch
Mainland Rum works the way Scotland's great independent bottlers do: founder Seth Benhaim hunts down mature casks of rum from distilleries across the continental United States and releases them one barrel at a time, with the origin, age, cask and strength printed right on the label. This Louisiana cask comes from sugarcane country — distilled from local molasses and cane sugar in Lacassine, in the heart of Louisiana's cane belt — where eleven years of humid Gulf Coast heat drove a fast, deep exchange between spirit and wood. Superlative Spirits picked this particular ex-rye barrel, and the rye-cask spice is part of its signature. Tasting Notes
Sweet molasses and toasted nuts up front, with charred oak, vanilla and a savory depth underneath. The palate runs to leather, dark fruit and rye-cask baking spice at full barrel strength, finishing long and dry with oak and a whisper of dark fruit. A few drops of water open up the molasses and nutty sweetness considerably.
How to Enjoy
Sip it neat in a small glass, rested, then add water a few drops at a time — at 130.4 proof you set the strength. Bourbon and rye drinkers will feel at home with the ex-rye cask.
