Normandy's Apple Spirit, Done Properly

The Pays d'Auge is Calvados's fine-wine district: the appellation requires apples grown in the area and double distillation in copper pot stills, and Chateau du Breuil exceeds the letter of it. The estate — a 16th-century chateau in Le Breuil-en-Auge surrounded by 42 hectares of orchards and 22,000 apple trees — ferments its own cider naturally, distills it twice keeping only the heart of the second run, and ages the spirit in oak. Roughly 27 kilos of apples make a single litre. The Fine won gold at both the IWSC and the World Calvados Awards in 2020. Explore the calvados range, the wider brandy shelf, or everything from Chateau du Breuil.

Tasting Notes

Warm golden color. Baked apple, orange zest, caramel and a hint of mint and vanilla on the nose; vigorous and fresh on the palate with youthful fruitiness, honeyed butterscotch and toffee, and a long, lightly smoky finish.

How to Enjoy

Neat as an aperitif or digestif; the classic Trou Normand mid-meal; in cocktails; or in the kitchen — apple pies, rabbit stews, veal chops with apples and cream.
