Canerock is the spiced rum from Maison Ferrand, the French house behind Planteray (formerly Plantation) rum — and it was built to prove a point: a spiced rum is only as good as the rum underneath it. The base is 100% Jamaican, drawn from two of the island's most storied distilleries, Long Pond and Clarendon, and the seasoning is entirely natural — Madagascar vanilla, Jamaican ginger, and Caribbean coconut, each infused separately so every spice keeps its own voice. A portion of the blend then rests in ex-Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, layering dried-fruit depth over Jamaica's famous pot-still funk. The result is a spiced rum with the pedigree of a fine aged rum — and the warmth of a beach at golden hour.

The Story

Maison Ferrand knows Jamaican rum well: through its stake in National Rums of Jamaica, the house part-owns the very distilleries Canerock is built from. For the blend, master blender Alexandre Gabriel's team selected high-ester pot-still rums from Long Pond aged five to ten years, alongside Clarendon rums — pot and column still — aged up to three years, plus a measure of unaged rum for lift. The three spices are treated individually rather than dumped in together: vanilla, ginger, and coconut are each infused separately in unaged rum — the ginger infusion is even re-distilled so its freshness doesn't overpower the blend — and only then assembled with the aged base. Twenty percent of the finished blend rests in barrels that once held Pedro Ximénez, the intensely sweet Spanish sherry, which brings structure, honeyed raisin depth, and an extra glow of Jamaican funk. Even the bottle tells the story: the embossed sea turtle and rippling waves honor the sea turtles that nest on Jamaica's shores and now swim in cleaner water thanks to local clean-up efforts the brand supports.

Tasting Notes

Vanilla and coconut lead the nose, joined by exotic fruit and the unmistakable funk of aged Jamaican pot-still rum underneath. The palate is full-bodied and warmly spiced — dark chocolate, caramel, and a touch of fresh ginger — before a long finish of sweet spice, caramel, and toasted coconut. It is a sweet-leaning, generous style, but the quality of the base rum keeps it balanced and characterful rather than sugary.

How to Enjoy

Canerock was designed as a sipping spiced rum: pour it neat, or over ice — the brand suggests a glass chilled in the freezer first, which softens the aromas without diluting them. In cocktails it is a natural Dark 'n' Stormy base (its own ginger infusion loves ginger beer), a rich rum-and-cola, or the spiced heart of a tiki build where vanilla and coconut belong. For the unspiced side of Jamaica, try the Funk Harbor Jamaican Dark Rum No 1 or its Funk Harbor Jamaican Silver Rum sibling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Canerock flavored with natural or artificial spices?
Natural only. Madagascar vanilla, Jamaican ginger, and Caribbean coconut are infused separately into the rum — no synthetic flavors — which is why the spice tastes woven into the spirit rather than painted on top.

Where does the rum in Canerock come from?
Two Jamaican distilleries: Long Pond, famous for high-ester pot-still rums aged five to ten years, and Clarendon, which contributes pot and column still rums aged up to three years plus some unaged rum.

What is the Pedro Ximénez cask finish?
About twenty percent of the blend rests in casks that previously held Pedro Ximénez sherry, one of the sweetest wines in the world. It adds notes of honey, raisin, and dried fruit, plus extra depth to the finish.

How strong is Canerock, and how should I drink it?
Canerock is bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof) in a 750mL bottle. Drink it neat or on ice as a sipper, or mix it into a Dark 'n' Stormy, rum and cola, or tiki cocktails.
