Aged Exclusively in Mizunara Oak
This exquisite expression was aged exclusively in Mizunara oak from Japan, one of the rarest oaks in the world. Mizunara, which means “water oak,” has slim twisted branches and is more porous than other oak species, making it far more difficult to cooper — and prized for the exotic spice and incense character it gives aged spirits. It is the flagship cask of the Barricas series; the other two finishes are the Oloroso Sherry Cask Anejo and the Pear Wood Cask Anejo.
The Barricas Series
Barricas is Alma del Jaguar's cask series, built to showcase the unique profiles created by different cask finishes on the same highland añejo. Tasting Notes
Sandalwood, coconut, honey, tea, and Japanese incense — the distillery's own tasting notes for the Mizunara cask, layered over the cooked-agave core of the Los Altos spirit. Pour it neat and give it a few minutes in the glass; it is a contemplative sipper for collectors of rare-cask tequila and Japanese-oak-aged spirits alike.
How It Is Made
Every Barricas expression starts from the same single-estate spirit: 100% Blue Weber agave from Los Altos, cooked in stone and brick ovens, roller-milled, and open-air fermented with wild and cultivated yeast strains. It is double distilled in copper pot stills with deep well water drawn from 244 meters, then matured for 22 months. Alma del Jaguar was created to help protect wild jaguars in Mexico and the United States, and a share of proceeds supports conservation groups such as the Northern Jaguar Project.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Mizunara oak?
A rare Japanese oak (Quercus mongolica) known as “water oak.” Its twisted growth and porous grain make it difficult to cooper into casks, and it lends distinctive sandalwood and incense notes to spirits aged in it.
How long is the Mizunara Cask Anejo aged?
22 months, spent exclusively in Mizunara oak casks from Japan, per the producer's production notes.
How should I serve it?
Neat, in a stemmed tasting glass, at room temperature — the 44% ABV (88 proof) carries the cask aromatics without needing water or ice.
