The Macallan Double Cask 12 Year Old Scotch Whisky is a 750mL single malt bottled at 43% ABV (86 proof) for the US market, matured for a minimum of twelve years in two cask types — sherry-seasoned American oak and sherry-seasoned European oak, both seasoned with Oloroso sherry in Jerez, Spain — and married at The Macallan Estate in Speyside, Scotland, with the American oak deliberately to the fore. It shows entirely natural colour. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

Two Oaks, One Sherry Seasoning

Double Cask, launched in 2016, was the first Macallan core expression built to make American-oak sherry casks the headline: oak from forests in Ohio, Missouri and Kentucky, and European oak from northern Spain and the French Pyrenees, all shipped to Jerez to be made into casks and seasoned with Oloroso sherry before travelling to Speyside for twelve years of maturation. The collection sits between the Sherry Oak and Colour ranges in the current Macallan line. Explore the estate's whiskies on the The Macallan vendor page or browse our Scotch whisky collection — and for the sherry-oak flagship at the range's summit, see The Macallan Sherry Oak 25 Year Old.

Tasting Notes

Per the producer's current notes: fudge with candied orange and lemon, vanilla and soft spice on the nose; milk-chocolate raisins and creamy toffee balanced with orange peel and gentle spice on the palate; and a medium finish of sweet oak.

How to Enjoy

Neat in a stemmed glass — the American oak sweetness reads clearly — or over a single cube for a softer, toffee-led pour. More Macallan is on the The Macallan vendor page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Double Cask and Sherry Oak 12?
Wood: Sherry Oak matures in European oak sherry casks alone, for a darker, dried-fruit style. Double Cask marries European oak with a prominent share of American oak sherry casks, giving a sweeter, fudge-and-citrus profile.

What proof is the US bottling of Double Cask 12?
86 proof — 43% ABV — in the 750mL US bottling. The 40% figure belongs to the 700mL UK/European bottling.

Is Double Cask 12 chill filtered or coloured?
The Macallan presents the Double Cask collection as entirely natural colour — the golden tone comes from the sherry-seasoned oak alone.
