The Last Drop 48 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky is a 97.2-proof (48.6% ABV) natural-cask-strength blend — Release #4, distilled no later than 1965 and matured 48 years in one of the oldest traditional warehouses in the Highlands. A small volume of the original blend was selected by the chief blender 27 years before bottling and refilled into fresh ex-bourbon American oak casks; each of the 592 bottles is hand-sealed and wax-dipped at cask strength, unfiltered, and presented in a leather case with a 50 mL miniature and a leather-bound booklet of certification with space for personal tasting notes. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor, San Diego, CA.

  • Age: 48 years — youngest components distilled 1965; many far older
  • Origin: Scotland
  • Production: The Last Drop Distillers (founded 2008 by Tom Jago and James Espey OBE; now Sazerac-owned); 592 bottles; released March 2015

Whisky the Likes of Which May Never Be Tasted Again

Several of the distilleries in this blend have long since closed — which is why founder James Espey called it "like nectar; old but fresh." The Last Drop's model is the opposite of volume: tiny parcels of extraordinary old whisky, released once, then gone. Release #4 is the 48-year expression: the youngest whisky in it was distilled in 1965, the chief blender re-casked the selection 27 years before bottling, and every bottle left the warehouse hand-sealed in wax with its own 50 mL miniature and certification booklet. Explore the The Last Drop releases and the rarest bottles in our Scotch whisky collection.

Tasting Notes

Nose: warm figs and ripe peaches balanced with layers of pear and cinnamon-spiced orange. Palate: smooth, complex, honeyed — a slow release of ripened peaches, pear brandy, and toasted oak wood. Finish: warm and lingering with hints of dark chocolate, almond, and peach.

How to Enjoy

Neat, at room temperature, in a tulip glass — nothing else. This is a once-in-a-lifetime pour; add nothing, rush nothing. The 50 mL miniature is for sharing the moment without opening the full bottle twice.
