The Flagship of Scotland's Most Self-Sufficient Distillery
Springbank is the only distillery in Scotland that carries out 100% of production on one site — malting its own barley on traditional floor maltings, mashing, fermenting, distilling two and a half times, maturing and bottling, all in Campbeltown, where the Mitchell family has distilled since 1828. The 10 Year Old is the purest introduction to that house style: bourbon casks give it orchard fruit and vanilla, sherry casks add darker spice and weight, and the lightly peated, faintly salty spirit underneath is unmistakably coastal. It is the bottle that explains why Campbeltown, once home to dozens of distilleries, still commands a category of its own. Browse the house on the Springbank vendor page.
Tasting Notes
Per the distillery's official notes: orchard fruit and pear on the nose with a hint of peat, vanilla and malt; a palate of malt, oak, nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla; and a sweet finish with a lingering salty tingle — the Campbeltown shoreline in the glass. (Springbank rotates its published notes slightly by batch.)
How to Enjoy
Neat, with a few drops of water to lift the orchard fruit. It is also the natural starting point before the darker, fully sherry-led Springbank 15 Year Old; more single malts are in our Scotch whisky collection.
Frequently Asked Questions
What casks mature Springbank 10?
A combination of bourbon and sherry casks. The exact marriage varies from batch to batch — recent batches have run roughly 60% bourbon to 40% sherry, but the distillery does not fix the ratio as a formula.
Is Springbank peaty?
Lightly. Springbank dries its barley with a short peat smoke, so the peat sits as a background savoury note rather than the medicinal hit of an Islay malt. (The family's heavily peated spirit is bottled as Longrow, and its unpeated one as Hazelburn.)
Why does Springbank cost more than other 10-year-olds?
Scale and method: floor-malting all its own barley, a 2.5-times distillation, long fermentations and doing everything on one small site makes far less whisky, far more slowly, than industrial single malt production.
