Lochlea Sowing Edition is springtime in a whisky glass — the first release of Lochlea's farm-calendar series, a 700mL single malt distilled at the family-owned Lochlea Farm in Ayrshire, Scotland, where Robert Burns lived and worked from 1777 to 1784. Every Sowing Edition is matured 100% in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels, bottled non-chill filtered with natural colour: the First Crop (2022) at 48% ABV, later crops at 46%. Production director John Campbell — formerly of Laphroaig — oversees every cask. Order it online at Del Mesa Liquor, San Diego, CA.

  • Proof / ABV: 48% (First Crop) / 46% (later crops)
  • Age: no age statement — young farm-distilled malt, crop-cycle release
  • Casks: 100% first-fill ex-bourbon barrels
  • Origin: Lochlea Farm, Ayrshire, Scotland (Lowlands) — independent family distillery
  • Style: non-chill filtered, natural colour — the "spring" edition of the series

Planting Season, Bottled

Lochlea's seasonal series mirrors the farming calendar: Sowing (spring, green label) arrives when the barley seed goes into the ground; Harvest, Fallow, and Ploughing follow the year. The Sowing Edition is the brightest and freshest of the four — the distillery's signature apple-and-pear character straight from first-fill bourbon wood. Named "Best First Release of 2022" by The Whiskey Ring. Browse the Lochlea collection or explore Del Mesa's scotch whisky shelf.

Tasting Notes

Green apple skins, pear drops, and custard creams with vanilla and citrus freshness; orchard fruit and hazelnut through the palate (consistent across crops).

How to Enjoy

Neat in a tulip glass, with a drop of water to open the orchard fruit. A spring whisky that suits an afternoon pour as much as an evening one.
