Islay's Farm Distillery, at Full Power
Kilchoman remains one of the few farm distilleries in Scotland: barley grown on its own fields at Rockside Farm, floor malted, distilled and matured on site since the first spirit ran in 2005. Batch Strength gathers the distillery's heavily peated spirit from a vatting of re-charred red wine casks, Oloroso sherry butts and bourbon barrels, then takes only a few drops of water after maturation to land at 57% ABV. The result is Kilchoman at its most intense — coastal peat smoke stacked against dark fruit and spice. Explore the Kilchoman collection and compare it against the wider Scotch whisky aisle at Del Mesa.
Tasting Notes
Per the distillery's official profile: red fruits, fresh cherries and heather blossom against intense peat smoke on the nose; toffee, rich baking spices and vanilla over lasting smoke on the palate; a silky, full-textured finish of crumpets, butter and honey.
How to Enjoy
Neat in a tulip glass first to meet it at full strength, then a few drops of water to open the red-fruit and spice layers. It also anchors a peat-forward tasting flight — try it beside a sherried Highland malt to feel what cask strength does to smoke.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does "batch strength" mean?
Several selected casks are vatted and bottled with almost no water added after maturation — stronger than standard bottlings but more consistent bottle to bottle than a single cask.
How peated is Kilchoman Batch Strength?
It is a heavily peated Islay malt in the distillery's house style, with intense smoke woven through citrus, dark fruit and spice.
Is it chill filtered or coloured?
Neither — it is bottled non-chill filtered at natural colour, so expect a full, oily texture.
If your shelf leans toward bold, smoky malts, Kilchoman Batch Strength deserves a spot on it — order online from Del Mesa Liquor, San Diego, CA.
