Doc Swinson's Alter Ego Solera Method Rye Whiskey is a 95-proof (47.5% ABV), 750mL straight rye that takes an Old World aging technique and aims it at American whiskey. Two MGP rye mash bills — 95% rye/5% malted barley and 51% rye/45% corn/4% malted barley — age 3 to 6 years in new American oak, then enter a Spanish-style solera of ex-Caribbean rum casks (rum aged up to 8 years; cask origins St. Croix, Trinidad, Venezuela, and Jamaica), where only a portion of the oldest tier is bottled and the tiers above refill it. The solera was established in 2020 and the whiskey is bottled non-chill filtered in Ferndale, Washington. Order online at Del Mesa Liquor for San Diego delivery or pickup.

A Solera Built for Rye

Solera aging — the fractional blending system behind fine sherry and old rum — barely exists in American whiskey, which is exactly why Doc Swinson's tried it. When the blender found himself with an abundance of 5-plus-year Caribbean rum and freshly dumped bourbon barrels, the answer was a rum-cask solera built around two MGP ryes. Each bottling draws from the oldest tier while younger whiskey cascades down through the system, so every bottle carries a little of everything the solera has ever held. The result bridges two worlds: rye's spice and rum's tropical generosity.

Tasting Notes

Expect a hint of smoke behind caramel apples, poached spiced pears, and peach pit, with cherry blossom, molasses, and anise curling through the middle. The brand calls it "Caribbean spice cake" — vanilla frosting richness over dried fruit — and it finishes with the kind of round, molasses-tinged warmth that makes it a rye even non-rye drinkers reach for.

How to Enjoy

Neat or with a single cube to let the rum-cask fruit open up; the 95-proof frame keeps it supple in a Manhattan or a rum-tinged Old Fashioned. Pair with dark chocolate or grilled pineapple. See more finished expressions in our rye whiskey collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "solera method" mean for this rye?
A stacked system of rum casks: only part of the oldest tier is bottled at a time, and it's refilled from the next-oldest tier down, so every bottle is a blend of many ages — including whiskey from the solera's founding in 2020.

Has the Solera Method Rye won awards?
Yes — 96 points and Double Gold at the New York International Spirits Competition, 94 points and Gold at Tastings.com (named 2022 Best Cask-Finished Straight Rye Whisky), and Double Gold at the San Francisco Spirits Competition.

Is it chill filtered?
No — it is bottled non-chill filtered, which preserves the texture picked up from the rum casks.
