Blue Run Trifecta Blend Bourbon Whiskey is a 117.1-proof (58.55% ABV) 750mL small-batch bourbon — the brand's first three-age Kentucky Straight Bourbon, blended by Blue Run Whiskey Director Shaylyn Gammon from 189 barrels. It unites three whiskeys: a 6-year-old base (46% of the blend), an 8-year-old (22%), and a 9-year-old (32%), the older two drawn from the hottest upper reaches of their rickhouses — what Gammon calls "wood heat" barrels. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor, San Diego, CA.

  • ABV: 58.55% (117.1 proof — near barrel proof)

  • Ages blended: 46% 6-year + 22% 8-year + 32% 9-year (10% more of the 9-yr than the 8-yr, tuned for approachability at proof)

  • Blender: Shaylyn Gammon, Blue Run's Whiskey Director
  • Origin: Kentucky straight bourbon whiskeys (brand acquired by Molson Coors, 2023)

Three Ages, One Pour

High rickhouse heat forces water out of a barrel and concentrates alcohol, so top-floor barrels extract wood intensity fast — the "wood heat" of Gammon's blending language. Trifecta balances that intensity with a six-year-old base that makes up nearly half the bottle, 10% more of the nine-year-old than the eight to keep it approachable at 117.1. The nine-year-old has its own legend: after being bought from a partner distillery, it somehow made its way from Kentucky to Spain before Blue Run got it home — Gammon calls it the "lost whiskey." The pewter butterfly medallion on the bottle — an alloy of three metals — nods to the three whiskeys inside. Browse the Blue Run collection and high-proof bourbon at Del Mesa.

Tasting Notes

Nose of unsalted brown butter, French vanilla cream, warm dark brown sugar, cinnamon, and spicy pepper with hints of fig and dehydrated apple. The palate is silky — cinnamon-spiced candied apple, baked bread, caramel, peppermint, and white chocolate with balanced wood char. The finish runs warm vanilla and weathered oak, medium in length.

How to Enjoy

At near-barrel proof, it earns a splash of water or a single large cube — neat first, then opened up. Built for the serious pour: a Glencairn, no rush.

Frequently Asked Questions

What proof is Blue Run Trifecta?
117.1 proof (58.55% ABV) — bottled at near barrel proof.

What ages are blended in Trifecta?
Six, eight, and nine-year-old Kentucky straight bourbons — 46%, 22%, and 32% of the blend respectively.

Why is it called Trifecta?
Three distinct aged whiskeys in one bottle — the pewter butterfly medallion (an alloy of three metals) is the nod.

Is Trifecta finished in toasted barrels?
No — it is a straight blend. The "wood heat" barrels were simply aged at the top of the rickhouse, where heat concentrates the wood character.
