Effen Vodka
Effen Vodka is a 40% ABV (80 proof) Dutch vodka distilled from 100% premium wheat and continuously distilled for a clean, neutral, bartender-built mixing spirit. Distilled at Hooghoudt in Groningen in the northern Netherlands and finished with a proprietary filtration, it wears the signature hand-affixed latex non-slip sleeve — in a 750mL bottle. Designed by Bartenders, Not Committees
Effen's whole identity is the working bartender's: the name means "smooth, even, and balanced" in Dutch, the bottle carries a rubber sleeve so it never slips in a wet speed rack, and the liquid was built to disappear into cocktails while keeping them clean. The wheat is French, the distillation is continuous, the filtration proprietary — and the result took Gold at the 2008 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. It is the original; the flavored line came later. Shop the vodka shelf or compare with the flavored Effen expressions.
Tasting Notes
Clean and neutral with a soft grain note. Trade reviews find a light, crisp, smooth palate — subtle wheat and vanilla, a faint cracked-pepper spice edge — and a clean, refreshing finish. Distiller.com's take: soft nose of creamed wheat, toasted vanilla, hints of dulce de leche; smooth, creamy finish. Nothing shouts; everything mixes.
How to Enjoy
This is a mixing vodka first: martinis (it was built for them), vodka sodas, cosmos, mules — anywhere neutrality is a virtue. It also sips respectably neat from the freezer; the wheat gives it just enough body to stand alone. Store in the freezer for instant cocktails.
