Distilled at Laphroaig on the Isle of Islay, Scotland, it draws on the distillery's archive of rare whiskies matured in its Atlantic storehouse: a blend of 7- to 21-year-old single malts from ex-bourbon barrels, European oak, Oloroso sherry casks and butts, and quarter casks.
"Lore" is Gaelic for transmission — of a skill or tradition passed down through generations — and this is Laphroaig's answer to the question of what that transmission tastes like: "If you could bottle the soul of Laphroaig, you'd hold Lore in your hands." The launch recipe traces its lineage through founder brothers Alexander and Donald Johnston (early 1800s), Ian Hunter (1920s, who pioneered old Bourbon casks), Bessie Williamson, and Iain Henderson.
