A Trendsetter's Pechuga

Luis Enrique Juárez comes from five generations of distilling tradition in San Agustín Amatengo, a community in the Ejutla district renowned for its refrescadera distillation — a traditional copper still fitted with a water-cooled condensing chamber that produces a remarkably clean yet richly textured mezcal. He learned alongside his father, Sergio, started leading his own production in 2015 (he also founded the Gozona brand), and has earned international recognition for his mastery of the refrescadera. Luis is known as an experimenter: his pineapple and red-fruit pechugas are creations other maestros now follow.

This pechuga begins with an exceptional Espadín shaped by southern Oaxaca's Central Valleys — warm days, cool nights, mineral-rich soils — then is redistilled with red fruits ("frutos rojos"), which the label shows tumbling around the agave: strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and more. Puntiagudo bottles the batch under Luis's name, as it does for each of its maestros — compare the Puntiagudo Nazario Salas Pulquero Mapisaga Mezcal from Puebla.

Tasting Notes

The Espadín base brings cooked agave, fresh herbs, delicate floral aromas, gentle minerality, and a refined smokiness; the red-fruit redistillation layers bright berry fruit over the top without turning the spirit sweet, and at 50.8% the fruit, agave, and refrescadera texture stay in remarkable balance.

How to Enjoy

Sip neat — pechuga is a celebration spirit, made for marking occasions. Fans of the style should also try the classic Del Maguey Single Village Mezcal Pechuga, and gift-givers will find this bottle featured among the rare picks in our Holiday Gift Guide.
