The Traditional Mash, at Full Strength
Where the flagship Metamodernity bourbon goes wheated with roasted oats, this expression is Matchbook's traditional bourbon mash — corn, Danko rye from Thor Oechsner and malted barley from Valley Malt — presented undiluted as an expression of the distillery's Kelvin barrels, coopered from wood air-dried for 36 months to preserve character. Matchbook's treatise for its whiskies is to bring the grain forward and spotlight the wood, and at cask strength both arrive unfiltered by proofing water. It is a bold counterpoint within our American whiskey range.
Tasting Notes
Banana, ginger, black pepper and hay, with crème brûlée sweetness underneath — round and bold, the rye spice pushing through the corn's richness, finishing long and warming.
How to Enjoy
Neat, over a large cube, or in Matchbook's Whiskey Buck: 2 oz Cask Strength, 3/4 oz lime juice, 3/4 oz ginger syrup, topped with soda. If you prefer your bourbon at a gentler proof, the wheated Metamodernity Bourbon Whiskey is bottled at 48%, and our Holiday Gift Guide has more ideas for the high-proof drinker.
FAQ
What does cask strength mean? The bourbon is bottled at the proof it comes out of the barrel, with no water added to bring it down — here, 53% ABV.
How is it different from Metamodernity Bourbon? A different mash bill (a traditional corn-rye-barley recipe instead of the wheated, oat-signed one) and a heavier #4 char, bottled undiluted.
Where is it made? Distilled and aged by Matchbook Distilling Co. in Greenport, New York, from New York-grown grains.
