GlenAllachie Sinteis Series 11 Year Old French Virgin Oak and Oloroso Sherry Cask Matured Scotch Whisky 2014
GlenAllachie Sinteis Series 11 Year Old French Virgin Oak and Oloroso Sherry Cask Matured Scotch Whisky 2014 is a limited-edition Speyside single malt presented exactly as Master Distiller Billy Walker intended: bottled at a cask strength of 57.4% ABV (114.8 proof), non-chill filtered and with no colour added. The Story
‘Sinteis’ (pronounced sin-teesh) is Scottish Gaelic for ‘synthesis’, and the series is Billy Walker’s study in cask creativity: two bold yet complementary wood types merged into one harmonious expression. Part I paired Chinquapin virgin oak with Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, and Part II turned to Scottish virgin oak and Oloroso. For Part III, the focus shifts to French virgin oak from the Limousin forests of central France — prized for a wide grain structure that encourages deep interaction between spirit and wood. The casks were given a medium toast and medium char, then air-dried for 15 months before filling, so the French oak lays down honeyed spice and structure against the dark, dried-fruit richness of Oloroso sherry maturation.
Tasting Notes
Colour: Burnished mahogany.
Nose: Orange zest, nutmeg and dried orchard fruits, with honeycomb, maraschino cherries, mocha and crystallised brown sugar.
Palate: Heather honey, spiced orange and baked apple, followed by winter truffle, muscovado sugar and cinnamon, with hazelnuts and mocha on the finish.
How to Enjoy
Pour it neat in a tulip glass and give it a few minutes to open up; at a full 57.4% cask strength, a few drops of still water will uncoil the concentrated sherry fruit and French oak spice without dulling either. It is a natural after-dinner malt alongside dark chocolate or a wedge of aged cheese, and a rewarding pour for collectors working through our Scotch whisky shelves.
