The Story
Floc de Gascogne has been made in Gascony since the 16th century by a simple, time-honored method: fresh grape must is blended with Armagnac, which halts fermentation before it starts and preserves the grape's natural sweetness. At Chateau de Millet, just outside Eauze, the Deche family farms traditional grape varieties and distills its own Armagnac on site. For this white bottling, Colombard and Gros Manseng juice is blended with the estate's Armagnac and rested in vats for several months before bottling at the domaine, giving an authentic, estate-made expression of the appellation.
Tasting Notes
Bright pale gold in the glass. The nose is generous with white fruit, candied citrus, acacia honey and white flowers. The palate is round and naturally sweet yet fresh, moving through ripe fruit and apricot to a sweet almond note, with the Armagnac fully integrated on a long, gently warming finish.
How to Enjoy
Serve well chilled, straight or over ice, as an aperitif. It is a classic partner for foie gras and also works beautifully with melon, blue cheeses such as Roquefort, and fruit desserts like apricot tart or peach crumble. Once opened, keep the bottle refrigerated.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Floc de Gascogne?
Floc de Gascogne is a mistelle, or vin de liqueur, from Gascony in southwest France. It is made by blending fresh, unfermented grape juice with Armagnac from the same region; the spirit stops fermentation, so the drink keeps the natural sweetness and fresh fruit character of the grapes at a moderate 16.5% ABV.
How should I serve Chateau de Millet Floc de Gascogne White?
Serve it well chilled as an aperitif, on its own or over ice. It also pairs well with foie gras, melon, blue cheese and fruit-based desserts.
What grapes are used in the white Floc de Gascogne?
The grape juice comes from Colombard and Gros Manseng, each making up half the blend, fortified with Armagnac distilled at Chateau de Millet itself.
Is this a sweet drink?
Yes. Because fermentation is stopped with Armagnac, the natural sugars of the grape juice remain, giving a round, fruity sweetness balanced by freshness rather than heaviness.
