Mead for Scandinavia's Oldest Town
Ribe Mjod was brewed to celebrate the 1,300th anniversary of Ribe — Scandinavia's oldest town — with the recipe prepared in cooperation with the Ribe Viking Centre, the living-history museum that reconstructs the town's Viking Age. Where Dansk Mjod's other meads lean on spice, this one leans on fruit: fresh, unfiltered, unpasteurised local apple juice is added to the honey-and-water base to lift the flavour and bring a line of acidity against the honey's sweetness, while hops go into the maturation tank as a bittering balance and bog myrtle — the old Nordic brewing herb, called porse in Danish — seasons the finish. It pours from the range's signature matte, rune-shouldered stoneware-look bottle. Browse the meadery on the Dansk Mjod vendor page.
Tasting Notes
The producer and importer publish no formal tasting note for Ribe Mjod; by its construction, expect the Dansk house signature — deep honey sweetness first — cut by fresh apple fruit and acidity, with the hops and bog myrtle drying the finish. The importer notes the mead ages well and may throw a natural yeast sediment.
How to Enjoy
The importer suggests serving it cooled or at room temperature, as a dessert honey wine — pour small glasses after dinner, with blue cheese, apple desserts, or on its own as the sweet course. More after-dinner pours are in our dessert wine collection and the wider wine collection.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Ribe Mjod?
A Danish mead — honey wine — made by Dansk Mjod with apple juice, hops and bog myrtle added to the honey base. It was created for the 1,300th anniversary of Ribe, Scandinavia's oldest town, in cooperation with the Ribe Viking Centre.
How strong is Ribe Mjod?
19% ABV, as printed on the bottle's own label — mead at the fortified end of the honey-wine range, which is why it is poured in small glasses like a dessert wine.
What is myrica gale?
Bog myrtle — a aromatic shrub (Danish: porse) used to season drinks in northern Europe long before hops became standard. Here it adds a resinous, herbal note alongside the hops.
