WhistlePig Snout to Tail 10 Year Old Toasted Bourbon Whiskey is a 44% ABV (88 proof), 750mL straight bourbon aged 10 years and finished in Vermont oak barrels fitted with two distinctly toasted heads — a medium toast at the "snout" and a smoked maple wood toast at the "tail" — with the barrels flipped 180 degrees so the whiskey takes on both. It comes from WhistlePig's 500-acre farm in Shoreham, Vermont, and it is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor, San Diego, CA.

A Bourbon Finished Snout-to-Tail

WhistlePig built its name on a 10-year-old rye; a decade on, Snout-to-Tail is billed as that rye's "perfect ten" partner — a bourbon given a world's-first finish. Each finishing barrel carries two different toasts, one at each head, and the barrel is flipped end over end in the warehouse so the bourbon seasons against both the medium-toast Vermont oak and the smoked maple toast. Even the proof is a wink: 88, for the 880 miles between the Vermont farm and WhistlePig's PiggyBank outpost in Louisville. Head Blender Meghan Ireland calls it toasted barrel ageing "taken to ten." Tasting Notes

WhistlePig's official notes: honey, brown sugar and toasted cashew on the nose; roasted almonds and baked cornbread on the palate; and a finish of butterscotch, fresh wheat crust and cedar — with the rich caramel, vanilla and smoky maple the two toasts lay over the top.

How to Enjoy

Neat or on one large cube — the toasted-oak sweetness and maple smoke need room, not dilution. It also stirs down into a maple-kissed Old Fashioned with nothing more than bitters and an orange coin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why 88 proof? As a wink to the 880 miles between WhistlePig's Vermont farm and its PiggyBank outpost in Louisville, Kentucky.

What are the two toasts? The finishing barrels have a Vermont oak medium toast at one head — the "snout" — and a Vermont oak smoked maple wood toast at the other — the "tail." The barrels are flipped 180 degrees so the bourbon captures both.

Is the finish toasted or charred? Toasted. WhistlePig's process is a two-toast finish, which is what sets it apart from standard charred-barrel ageing.

How old is it? Ten years — the bourbon counterpart to WhistlePig's flagship 10 Year rye.

Ten years, two toasts, one flip — order WhistlePig Snout to Tail online from Del Mesa Liquor in San Diego, CA.
