A Royal Approval, Bottled
The name reaches back to 1738, when King Louis XV granted the young house the rare royal approval to plant new vines — the "Accord Royal." The House builds the blend the Fine Champagne way: only Grande and Petite Champagne eaux-de-vie, distilled on their lees for depth, then aged across a rotation of barrel ages so freshness and maturity land in the same glass. Tasting Notes
Colour: Copper. Nose: Plum and fig jam with toffee, brioche and toasted bread from the barrel toast. Palate: Mellow butterscotch, baked spice such as cinnamon, and dark chocolate. Finish: Exceptionally round and creamy, with concentrated nutty aromas.
How to Enjoy
Neat in a tulip glass is the house pour. It also carries a Sidecar with unusual depth, and a single cube opens the butterscotch and spice without thinning the creaminess.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Fine Champagne mean? A Cognac blended only from Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne eaux-de-vie, with at least half from Grande Champagne — the two most chalk-rich, age-worthy crus in Cognac.
What does "distilled on the lees" mean? The wine is distilled together with its fine lees (spent yeast), which gives the spirit a rounder, creamier texture and richer flavour than a fully clarified wine would.
Is 1738 Accord Royal a VSOP? It sits above VSOP in style — a Fine Champagne blend built for roundness and maturity rather than a single age grade — which is why the House bottles it under the 1738 name instead of a VSOP label.
