Olmeca Altos Anejo Tequila is the barrel-aged expression of the bartender-built Los Altos range — 40% ABV (80 proof), 750mL, 100% Blue Weber agave grown in the highlands around Arandas, Jalisco, cooked in brick ovens, part-crushed by tahona, double distilled in copper pots and rested in ex-bourbon American oak until it pours amber with dried fruit, vanilla and chocolate. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

Built by Bartenders, Aged Like It Matters

Altos was created in 2009 by two London bartenders, Henry Besant and Dre Masso, working with maestro tequilero Jesus Hernandez at Destileria Colonial in Arandas — a highlands town over two thousand metres up, where the agave grows slow and sweet in red volcanic soil. The platform was designed for flavour first: brick ovens, a tahona in the crush, copper pots. The Anejo takes that bright highland spirit and gives it a full ex-bourbon-barrel rest, trading the Plata's green snap for dried fruit, almond, vanilla and chocolate while the cooked agave holds the centre. Line it up with its siblings in our anejo tequila selection, explore the tequila range, or visit the Olmeca Altos vendor page.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Cooked agave with dried fruit and almond (brand notes). Palate: Wood, vanilla and chocolate over the highland agave core, tannins firming the middle. Finish: Long and warm, chocolate and spice easing out.

How to Enjoy

Neat is the honest pour — the barrel work deserves an unhurried glass. It also builds a serious Tequila Old Fashioned and can stand in for whiskey in a Manhattan riff, where the chocolate and vanilla read beautifully against sweet vermouth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Olmeca Altos made? At Destileria Colonial de Jalisco (NOM 1111) in Arandas, in the Los Altos highlands of Jalisco — agave country over 2,000 metres above sea level.

What does tahona mean for this tequila? Part of the cooked agave is crushed with a tahona — a two-ton volcanic stone wheel — the slow pre-industrial method that keeps more agave fibre and flavour in the ferment than a roller mill alone.

How does the Anejo differ from the Altos Reposado? Both rest in ex-bourbon oak, but the Anejo rests far longer (the Reposado is six to eight months), pushing the profile from citrus and vanilla into dried fruit, almond and chocolate.
