NV15 Cain Cuvée Napa Valley 2015 is a 750mL red blend with a twist no other Napa wine attempts: it is a blend of two vintages, the 2014 and the 2015, composed by Cain Vineyard & Winery on Spring Mountain. The blend runs 45% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc and 18% Petit Verdot, drawn 70% from the Spring Mountain District and 30% from the Napa Valley floor. Cain builds the Cuvée from its lightest, most drinkable lots, harvested and vinified for freshness. Order it online at Del Mesa Liquor in San Diego, CA.

Two Vintages in One Bottle

Cain has blended two vintages into the Cuvée since the project's first wines in 1990 — a method the winery notes has nearly vanished outside Champagne. The thinking is simple: no two vintages are identical, and a thoughtful marriage of two can be more balanced and complex than either alone. For the NV15, both contributing years were powerful ones shaped by drought; Cain selected the lightest, most aromatic lots — often from the coolest corners of its mountain vineyard, and usually weighted toward the older vintage, which has had more time in cellar — then built the blend on wines made specifically for lightness and freshness. The estate vineyard itself climbs from 1,400 to 2,100 feet along the Mayacamas crest above St. Helena. Browse the winery on the Cain Vineyard & Winery vendor page.

Tasting Notes

In the winery's own assessment, the NV15 is the fullest Cuvée of its line: dark in colour with a shy bouquet that opens in the mouth — sweet plums, roasted meats and savoury mushroom, with firm, round fullness, a smooth texture and a lovely, satisfying bitterness on the finish.

How to Enjoy

This is a table wine by design — pour it with grilled seafood, roast chicken, mushroom pasta or charcuterie, and don't be afraid to give it a light chill on a warm evening. It drinks on release but has a track record of evolving beautifully for years. More Napa reds are in our red wine collection.
