Dansk Mjod GI is the bottle US trade mislabels — it is Gl. Dansk Mjod, "Old Danish Mead" — 19% ABV, 750mL, the Billund meadery's ginger-led traditional mead, brewed from honey, water, hops and ginger and poured from a heavy ceramic bottle. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

  • Ingredients: Honey, water, hops, ginger (producer list)
  • Name: "Gl." = Gammel = "Old" — Gl. Dansk Mjod, Old Danish Mead
  • Origin: Billund, Jutland, Denmark (Dansk Mjod A/S)

Gl. Dansk: The Old Danish Mead

The producer calls this one Gl. Dansk Mjod, and the "Gl." matters: it is the Danish abbreviation for *Gammel*, "old" — this is the house's old-style mead, aromatic, sweet and semi-dry, with a flavour the producer says is somewhat reminiscent of sherry. Where its sibling Viking Blod leads with hibiscus, Gl. Dansk leads with ginger, and the hops in the brew balance the honey with a dryish edge. US importer material describes the house's recipes as based on Danish recipes from about 1700. Pour the range side by side from our wine shelves, or browse the house on the Dansk Mjod vendor page.

Tasting Notes

Nose (importer): Big ginger notes over honey. Palate: Ginger meets honey — sweet and semi-dry, complex and slightly spicy, with the producer's sherry-like depth. Finish: Dryish and hoppy, very warming.

How to Enjoy

The producer's serving range runs both ways: chilled as an aperitif, or as a sweet dessert wine — and, in its own words, enjoyed with friends in an informal, hygge atmosphere.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "GI" in the name mean? It is a misreading of "Gl." — the abbreviation of the Danish word *Gammel*, meaning "old." The product's real name is Gl. Dansk Mjod, Old Danish Mead.

How is Gl. Dansk different from Viking Blod? Ginger leads here, with hops for balance and a semi-dry, sherry-like profile; Viking Blod leads with hibiscus and ginger and pours redder, sweeter and more floral. Both are 19% ABV.

How strong is it? 19% ABV — mead at fortified-wine strength, so pour it like one: small glasses, aperitif or dessert service.
