The Peated Side of Pitlochry
Ballechin is the name Edradour gives its heavily peated distillation, produced at the little Highland farm distillery since 2003 and named for a fellow Perthshire farm distillery that closed in 1927 — Alfred Barnard's 1880s survey recorded a peated whisky there. After early cask-experiment releases, the 10 Year Old became the core Ballechin bottling: bourbon casks do the heavy lifting, Oloroso sherry casks add depth, and the 46% ABV, unchillfiltered presentation keeps the smoke intact. Compare it with the unpeated house malt on the Edradour vendor page and in our whisky collection.
Tasting Notes
Per the producer's notes: herbal and grassy on the nose with sweetened smoke; a palate of chocolate and oak over spicy, earthy smokiness; and a finish of smouldering burnt heather, straight off the Highland hills.
How to Enjoy
Neat first — the sherry top dressing reads clearly at 46% — then with a splash of water to stretch the heather smoke. More peated malts are in our whisky collection and across our spirits collection.
