Wyoming Whiskey Outryder American Straight Whiskey
Wyoming Whiskey Outryder is the bottle for drinkers who find bourbon too sweet and rye too sharp — a 100-proof (50% ABV) bottled-in-bond American straight whiskey in a 750mL bottle, built from two distinct rye-heavy mashbills that deliberately miss both the bourbon and rye legal definitions. Mashbill one runs 48% winter rye / 40% corn / 12% malted barley ("almost a rye"); mashbill two runs 68% corn / 20% winter rye / 12% malted barley (high-rye bourbon style). Both were distilled in November 2011 from non-GMO grain grown in Byron, Wyoming. Available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor, San Diego, CA.

- Grain: non-GMO, grown in Byron, Wyoming
The Whiskey That Refused a Category
The name says it all: Outryder rides outside the lines. Because neither mashbill hits the 51% threshold for bourbon or rye, the whiskey can't legally be called either — so Wyoming Whiskey bottled it as straight American whiskey and let the liquid argue its own case. It did: 91 points from Whisky Advocate and 90 from Wine Enthusiast, with reviewers reaching for bakery language — pumpernickel, hot chocolate, yeast biscuits — more than barrel language. It's the distillery's boldest, spiciest pour. Taste the range in American whiskey or browse everything from Wyoming Whiskey at Del Mesa.
Tasting Notes
Copper to mahogany; pumpernickel bread with melted butter, beeswax and honey, warm cherry cobbler on the nose. The palate brings hot chocolate, yeast biscuits, molasses, and roasted cumin in brown butter, finishing long and warming with maple syrup over French toast.
How to Enjoy
Neat or with a single large cube — the rye spice opens beautifully with a touch of dilution; also a stellar Manhattan base.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why isn't Outryder called bourbon or rye?
It blends two mashbills — one 48% rye, one 20% rye — so it meets neither the 51%-corn bourbon rule nor the 51%-rye rye rule. "American straight whiskey" is the accurate legal label.
Is it bottled in bond?
Yes — 100 proof, bottled in bond, from a single distillery and a single distilling season per the bottled-in-bond rules.
Is it a limited edition?
Retailers list it as a limited edition — when it's gone, it's gone.
