The Dragon of the Sea
The Japanese dragon is a symbol of power, strength and authority, believed to bring luck. Ryujin, the deity of the sea in Japanese myth, is one of the most important of all Japanese dragons — representing the power of the ocean as an island deity and the patron of Japan, and believed to be one of the forefathers of the Japanese imperial dynasty. Recognizing the most significant dragon in Japanese culture gave rise to the bold and vibrant flavors of Ryujin whisky, here poured into a sculptural red and gold decanter that dominates any shelf it lands on. It joins the wider Ryujin family on our whisky shelves, including the Ryujin Bourbon Cask Single Malt.
Tasting Notes
Whisky on the nose, balanced against bright grain and citrus notes. Medium bodied on the palate, with flavors of graham crackers, vanilla, butterscotch and mandarin orange — the Mizunara oak lending the line's signature elegance underneath the richer, sweeter core. Collectors comparing sculptural Japanese bottles should also meet the Nikka Miyagikyo 10 Year Old, a very different, classic single malt.
How to Enjoy
Sip it neat or over a single large cube to let the butterscotch and mandarin open up; a highball with soda and an orange twist is the Japanese serve that suits its bright grain character. And once the bottle is empty, the decanter stays — it is a display piece in its own right.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Red Dragon the same as the gold Ryujin Dragon decanter?
No. They are different expressions: the Red Dragon is this red and gold 750mL decanter, while the gold Ryujin Dragon is a separate 1L all-gold decanter bottling.
What is Mizunara oak?
Mizunara is a rare Japanese oak prized for the incense-like spice, sandalwood and delicate vanilla it gives whisky — and notoriously difficult to work with, which is why casks are scarce.
Does it come in a gift box?
Yes, the Red Dragon is presented in a premium display gift box, ready for gifting or the top shelf.
