Roaming Road 17 Year Old Spain Rum
Roaming Road 17 Year Old Spain Rum is a single-cask Spanish rum from Roaming Road Spirits, the independent bottling project of Mike Gilmore — a former Wyoming liquor store owner and respected barrel picker who launched the brand in September 2024 to bottle one-off casks of 250 or fewer bottles at Bardstown Bourbon Company in Kentucky, never to be repeated. This cask was distilled in Spain from 100% pure sugar cane molasses on a column still, aged and matured seventeen years in ex-bourbon oak and finished in a Cotswold malt whisky cask, then bottled at cask strength, 60.6% ABV (121.2 proof), in a 750mL bottle, with no added sugars and no additives. Spain's rum tradition is rooted in the sugarcane fields of the Andalusian coast around Motril and Granada — the only cane-growing region in mainland Europe — and nearly all of it is consumed domestically, so a single cask aged this long and bottled at full strength for the American market is a genuine rarity. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

The Oddest Origin in the Lineup — and One of the Best
Roaming Road's motto is 'we go where the spirit takes us,' and Spain took the project somewhere almost no American bottler has been: this is believed to be among the first Spanish rums ever released by an American independent bottler. Seventeen years in wood on a column-still spirit, capped with a finish in a rare Cotswold malt whisky cask, produces a rum that is more about oak, dried fruit and concentration than raw cane character — with a subtle malt-whisky character threading through the finish. Tasting Notes
A flavor journey from floral notes and vanilla into rich molasses, dried fruit and concentrated oak, finishing with a surprising malt whisky character from the Cotswold cask — the high proof carries the weight without heat overwhelming the detail.
How to Enjoy
Serve it neat with a splash of water to open the dried fruit and malt notes. Whisky drinkers curious about rum will find a natural bridge here; compare it with the single malts in our whisky collection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Spain really make rum?
Yes — Spain has a small but real rum tradition rooted in the sugarcane fields of the Andalusian coast around Motril and Granada, the only cane-growing region in mainland Europe. Almost all of it is consumed in Spain, which is why a 17-year-old single cask bottled for the US is so unusual.
What is the Cotswold finish?
After maturing in ex-bourbon oak, the cask was finished in a cask that had held Cotswold malt whisky — an innovative final maturation that layers a subtle malt character over the rum's molasses richness.
How strong is it?
Cask strength at 60.6% ABV (121.2 proof), in a 750mL bottle, with no added sugars and no additives.
