Raising Glasses The Whistler 14 Year Old Rum is a single cask Venezuelan rum from Raising Glasses, the American independent bottler run by Lorri and John, a husband-and-wife team of longtime Scotch collectors who select their own casks and bottle them in 375mL under their own label. The Whistler — number 7 in their Folklore Series, in its Heavy Metal Edition livery — was distilled from molasses on a column still in Venezuela in 2008, spent twelve years aging in Venezuela and a further two in the UK, and was bottled in 2023 at cask strength, 62.1% ABV, with no sugar, coloring or other additives, in a run of 324 bottles in a 375mL bottle. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

El Silbon, the Whistling Ghoul

The Whistler is named for El Silbon, the whistling ghoul of Venezuelan folklore who roams at night carrying a sack of bones — a modest pour of rum is said to keep him away. Venezuela has drawn real attention since Brown-Forman bought Diplomatico, and its broker-sourced casks are among the cleanest Latin-style column rums on the independent market; bottled unsweetened at cask strength, this one shows more character than most Venezuelan rum because none of it has been sweetened away. Tasting Notes

Raising Glasses calls it the everything bagel of rums: sea salt caramel, bitter mocha, baking spice, toasted oak, a little citrus zing and a touch of funky petrol — a sumptuous smorgasbord that checks a wild variety of flavors in a single cask.

How to Enjoy

Pour a small measure neat and let the cask strength settle, or add water a few drops at a time to walk it from mocha and caramel toward the citrus and spice. The 375mL format is built for exactly this kind of exploration. More from this bottler lives across our spirits range.
