Ancestral Method, Three Years of Rest

Santa Catarina Minas is one of the last villages in Oaxaca where mezcal is still distilled in clay pots, and Rolando Angeles — who has worked with Puntiagudo at his own palenque since 2020 — is one of its rising maestros. For batch RA-CUI-01, wild Cuishe piñas averaging eight to ten years of age (3,901 kg in total) were harvested on February 5, 2022 and roasted for five days in a conical earthen oven over guamuchil and mesquite. There are no machines here: the cooked agave was crushed entirely by hand with machete and wooden mallets, fermented naturally for nine days in 1,000-liter oak vats with well water, and double-distilled on March 8, 2022 in a 100-liter clay pot still, yielding just 119 liters.

Rather than rushing to bottle, Puntiagudo rested the spirit in glass for over three years before bottling on March 15, 2025 — the same patience you'll find across the Puntiagudo range, starting with the Puntiagudo Nazario Salas Pulquero Mapisaga Mezcal from Puebla.

Tasting Notes

The nose opens with a bright burst of citrus and vegetal notes over citrus compote, a fresh sweet whisper of eucalyptus, hints of cactus, and moist green wood. The palate is medium-bodied and layered — damp wood beneath ripe banana, mango, and loquat — finishing long and warm with cooked seeds, green apple, and plum.

How to Enjoy

Sip neat in a copita to catch the clay-pot minerality. Minas fans can compare it with another village classic, the Del Maguey Single Village Mezcal Minero, or browse the wider mezcal tequila collection for more single-village bottles.
