Nikka Yoichi Japanese Whisky is a single malt from Nikka's first distillery on Hokkaido's coast — 90 proof (45% ABV) in 750mL, no age statement, vatted from peated malts matured predominantly in ex-bourbon oak. Founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, the father of Japanese whisky, Yoichi still heats its pot stills with hand-stoked coal fire, a method Scotland has all but abandoned. Whisky Advocate scored it 92 and named it 2016 Japanese Whisky of the Year. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor, San Diego, CA.

  • ABV: 45% (90 proof)
  • Size: 750mL
  • Style: single malt, no age statement (replaced the age-statement range in 2016)
  • Distillery: Yoichi, Hokkaido, Japan — founded 1934; direct coal-fired pot stills with downward lyne arms
  • Casks: predominantly ex-bourbon oak; peated but well below Islay levels
  • Awards: Whisky Advocate 92; 2016 Japanese Whisky of the Year; Gold, 2020 World Whiskies Awards

Coal Fire on the Hokkaido Coast

Taketsuru chose Yoichi because its climate reminded him of Scotland, where he apprenticed in the 1920s — sea fog off Ishikari Bay, snowmelt water from the Yoichi River, mountains on three sides. The coal-fired stills run past 1,000°C at the base, and the charring coal contributes its own aroma to a robust, peaty spirit that the coastal air then softens in cask. Nearly every reviewer reaches for "brine" or "seaweed" without being prompted — this is the maritime malt of Japan.

Tasting Notes

Deep amber; a full-bodied nose where mellow peat, smoke, and soot give way to candied citrus, black licorice, and spice; a firm, powerful palate of peat, melon, kiwi, almond, and walnut with chocolate mid-palate; a long, silky finish of ripe pear and apple with salty coastal freshness and a final whisper of menthol.

How to Enjoy

Neat in a tulip glass, or with a few drops of water to open the fruit. Contrast it with its Miyagikyo sibling from the Nikka line — peat versus sherry-cask elegance — or browse the whiskey shelf.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there no age statement? Nikka withdrew the Yoichi age-statement range in 2015; this NAS bottling, released 2016, is the permanent replacement.

Is Yoichi peated? Yes — moderately peated, well below Islay levels, with coastal brine character.

What makes the distillation unique? Hand-stoked coal-fired pot stills, a method Masataka Taketsuru learned in Scotland and kept when the industry moved to steam.
