Matchbook Distilling Day Trip Strawberry Amaro Liqueur is a low-ABV fruit amaro from Matchbook Distilling Co. in Greenport, on the North Fork of Long Island, New York — built from roughly two tons of local strawberries that were partly made into strawberry wine and partly distilled into strawberry eau de vie, then layered with nettle, quassia, jasmine, rose and nutmeg fruit. Bottled at 19% ABV in a 750mL bottle, it is bright, jammy and gently bitter — a strawberry aperitif that works anywhere in our liqueurs range a vermouth or bitter aperitif would.

  • Size: 750mL
  • Producer: Matchbook Distilling Co., Greenport, New York
  • Region: North Fork of Long Island, New York, USA
  • Botanicals: Nettle, quassia, jasmine, rose, nutmeg fruit

A Vermouth That Became an Amaro

Day Trip began with the Mattituck Lions Strawberry Festival: one year, some two tons of strawberries were left over and seemingly destined for the compost pile. Matchbook rescued them, took in a tote of strawberry wine, and set out to make a strawberry vermouth — until regulators insisted vermouth be made from wine grapes. The pivot produced this amaro instead: the strawberry wine and a strawberry eau de vie distilled from 100 gallons of the fruit were combined, the botanicals were left to macerate for a few months, and the result was filtered, sweetened and bottled. It sits naturally alongside the rest of our amaro & bitters shelf and the distillery's own Matchbook Distilling Eldest Daughter Vermouth.

Tasting Notes

Strawberry is front and center — ripe, jammy North Fork fruit — with green notes from the nettle, perfume from the jasmine and rose florals, and the woody, bitter pull of quassia carrying the finish. Floral sweetness rides over a genuinely bitter frame.

How to Enjoy

Matchbook's own serve is on the rocks, or with a splash of soda and a bright citrus slice. Use it as a vermouth replacement in classic cocktails, or try the house Daytripper: 1.5 oz Day Trip Strawberry Amaro, 0.25 oz espadin mezcal, 0.75 oz fresh grapefruit juice and 0.25 oz simple syrup, shaken and garnished with a grapefruit twist.
