A single malt from the excellent FEW Spirits, the craft distillery that settled down in the home of Prohibition, Evanston, Illinois. Taking their name from Francis Elizabeth Willard, who championed the temperance movement with the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, we've been wishing for the day when they produced a single malt.

From the first waft of the nose all the way to the lingering finish, this little beauty is rich and endlessly comforting. It's like dark chocolate and Ovaltine met and created a gorgeous single malt, the most wonderful love story never written.

Nose: Sugary vanilla fudge, salted caramel ice cream. Green apple too, with thyme honey and spices: garam masala and turmeric. Dark chocolate winds its way throughout.

Palate: Red apple now along with more fragrant exotic spices on a chocolate Flake.

Finish: Oak, spicy caramel, Ovaltine and chocolate.

I've had a FEW

Tonight’s dram is an American single malt from Illinois. It opens with Red Delicious apples, barley malt, and graham crackers, followed by vanilla and a little cinnamon. It has a light oily mouthfeel, and thick long legs that accentuate the rustic barley malt flavors and raw dried grasses (hay) through the finish. My immediate reaction was that I was drinking a Westward single malt – a very similar barley malt flavor profile and mouthfeel – not sweet at all – much to my liking. It is pleasant drinking and velvety smooth – you could sip all evening and wonder why the glass keeps getting empty. After one of these, you can say “I’ve had a FEW.”
