Don Alberto Extra Anejo Tequila is a 40% ABV (80 proof), 750mL extra anejo from Tequilera Puerta de Hierro (NOM 1477) in El Arenal, Jalisco — Gran Reserva de Don Alberto, the premium label of the Partida family, also known for Cava de Oro. It is made from 100% blue Weber agave cooked in stone and brick ovens and double distilled in stainless pot stills, then aged three years: two in French oak and a final year in medium-charred American white oak, per retailer specifications. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

The Partida Family's Longest Patience

Gran Reserva de Don Alberto is the reserve label of the Partida family of El Arenal — the family behind Cava de Oro, whose distillery, Tequilera Puerta de Hierro, sits on the Tequila Route in the valley where modern tequila began. The family's premium profile was developed around patient oak aging, and the Extra Anejo is its fullest expression: French oak first for spice and structure, then American white oak for the vanilla-and-butterscotch roundness, three years in total. Meet the younger expressions, the Don Alberto Joven and Don Alberto Blanco, on the Don Alberto vendor page, or browse more tequila.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Dark amber in the glass — cooked agave, vanilla, butter, dried fruit and caramel. Palate: Cooked agave and oak with black pepper, butter and butterscotch; warm brown spice and dried fruit carry through. Finish: Long, with the oak present from first sip to last.

How to Enjoy

Pour it neat, after dinner, in a stemmed glass — extra anejo is tequila's digestif. Give it ten minutes of air and skip the ice; a single cube at most if you prefer it cool.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is extra anejo tequila? The longest-aged tequila class, formalised in 2006: 100% agave tequila aged at least three years in oak barrels no larger than 600 litres. This Don Alberto meets that minimum with its three-year, two-oak program.

Who makes Don Alberto tequila? The Partida family at Tequilera Puerta de Hierro (NOM 1477) in El Arenal, Jalisco — the same family and distillery behind Cava de Oro.

Should you mix extra anejo in cocktails? It is made for sipping neat — years of barrel time are the flavour, and mixing covers them up.

Three years, two oaks, one family — order Don Alberto Extra Anejo Tequila from Del Mesa Liquor in San Diego, CA.
