A Cognac Finished in Madeira-Seasoned Oak

Deux Familles is a family house working in the grower-producer tradition, and this release shows its experimental side. The base cognac rests first in new French oak casks of 350 to 400 liters, which lay down structure and spice. For the finish, Limousin oak casks were shipped to the island of Madeira and left to soak in Madeira wine for two full years, so the wood arrives back in Cognac saturated with the fortified wine's dried-fruit character. The result sits naturally alongside the rest of our brandy and cognac shelf: recognizably cognac, with a dark, winey richness layered over it.

Tasting Notes

The nose leads with raisin, prune, and sweet wine, joined by balsamic depth, toffee, and a touch of coconut. The palate is full and smooth, layering dried plum and ripe grape over wine and nut flavors, and it carries through to a long, smooth finish.

How to Enjoy

Pour it neat in a tulip glass to let the Madeira influence open up, or add a few drops of water to pull the dried fruit forward. It also stands up beautifully in a stirred cognac cocktail where a drier VSOP would disappear.
