Colours of Rum Hampden DOK Oloroso Cask Rum 2023
Take Hampden Estate's most extreme rum — DOK, the 1,500–1,600 gr/hlpa ester marque — and lay it for nine months in a first-fill Oloroso sherry hogshead, and you get this: the Colours of Rum Hampden DOK Oloroso Cask. Distilled in April 2023, bottled in May 2024 at 63.4% ABV from cask #18, one of 323 bottles. The dry, nutty grip of Oloroso is the perfect sparring partner for DOK's tropical violence, and critics noticed — WhiskyFun scored this cask 87 points. A short finish in name only; in the glass it is anything but, and it earns its place in our rum collection.

The Story
Colours of Rum's 2023 Hampden experiment split one high-ester distillation three ways — bourbon, Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez casks — to show what nine months of European oak does to Jamaica's funkiest spirit. The Oloroso edition is the dry, structured one: where the PX turns sweet, Oloroso adds walnut, leather and rancio depth. It is a fascinating counterpoint to tropically aged Hampden like the Spinnaker Hampden LFCH 8 Year Old Rum 2016.
Tasting Notes
The nose is classic DOK — pineapple, papaya and a whiff of glue — tightened by toasted walnut and dried fig. On the palate it runs hot and sharp, esters first, then the sherry cask's nutty dryness, closing on a firm, slightly bitter, very long finish.
How to Enjoy
Neat in small pours, ideally tasted against its bourbon and PX siblings to feel the cask effect for yourself. A few drops of water tame the heat and pull the walnut and fig forward. Collectors of young, extreme Jamaican single casks should not wait on this one.
