The Story Behind Blend #4
The Krassel family has distilled sugarcane spirit on the steep hillsides of Santa María Tlalixtac, in Oaxaca's Cañada region, for three generations — German immigrant Max Krassel began with a handmade still on a coffee farm in the 1930s, and today his grandsons Rommel, Axel and William Krassel run the stills. Every Alambique Serrano rum starts with organic Java-varietal cane grown between 2,500 and 3,800 feet, hand-harvested and pressed in mobile mills, fermented with wild yeast, and distilled on the family's custom-built Krassel column and copper pot stills. Nothing is added — no sugar, no coloring, no flavoring. For Tres Maderas the brothers married rums from three very different casks: virgin acacia — a cooperage wood far more familiar from Italian grappa than from rum — plus ex-Cognac and ex-vino generoso (fortified wine) casks, for a blend that is herbal, earthy and dry rather than sweet.
Tasting Notes
Fresh cane and green herbs on the nose with honey, dried fruit and a floral acacia sweetness. The palate opens dry and earthy — orange peel, cinnamon, walnut and resinous wood — finishing long with a cooling herbal edge. If you enjoy the wood-driven side of the range, compare it with Alambique Serrano Blend #10 Rum.
How to Enjoy
Sip it neat first to meet the acacia and generoso-cask character at full strength, then add a few drops of water to open the dried fruit and spice. It also stands up beautifully in a rum old fashioned. Fans of French-oak spice should also try Alambique Serrano Cartier 30 Rum.
