Alambique Serrano 3 Años 1st Edition Rum is the first age-stated release from Alambique Serrano, the single-origin Oaxacan cane rum made by the Krassel family in Santa María Tlalixtac, in the steep hillsides of Oaxaca's Cañada region. This first edition is a 12-cask blend of copper pot still and custom Krassel column still rum — 82% column distillate aged 38 months and 18% pot distillate aged 40 months, all in new French oak — gently proofed with distilled water from the Río Blanco to 46.1% ABV (92.2 proof) and bottled in a 700mL bottle with no added sugar, no coloring and no chill filtration. The cane is the Java varietal, hand-harvested from fields between 2,500 and 3,800 feet, fermented with wild yeast in steel and pine vats. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

A First Edition From an Improbable Terroir

The Krassel family's story starts with Max Krassel, a German immigrant who arrived in Veracruz in 1917 and settled in Oaxaca making aguardiente on a coffee farm with a handmade still; today his great-grandsons — brothers Isidoro, Rommel, William and Axel Krassel Peralta — distill single-origin cane rum at altitude on stills they designed themselves. The 3 Años was the brand's first age-stated bottling, and it set the template: tropical aging in new French oak, honest proofing with distilled river water, and nothing added. Tasting Notes

Orange peel, cinnamon roll, apple juice, raisin cake and black pepper on the nose, opening into cinnamon butter, rolled oats, orange marmalade and red-hot candy, with ginger and nutmeg through the palate and a cooling menthol finish — spiced and generous, with the French oak framing rather than covering the cane.

How to Enjoy

Sip it neat to follow the pot-and-column blend, or build an Old Fashioned that tastes unmistakably Oaxacan. More aged agricole-style rums live across our spirits shelves and the rare and top shelf collection.
