Padró & Co. Rojo Clásico is a Spanish red vermouth from Tarragona — built on estate-grown Macabeo and Xarel-lo from the Padró family's own vineyards, infused with the family's red-vermouth herb formula, and aged 9–12 months in chestnut-wood barrels from the 1960s. Bottled at 18% ABV in a 750mL bottle, it is creamy and fresh with sweet spice, candied fruit, and a gently bitter Mediterranean-herb finish. Available to order online from Del Mesa Liquor in San Diego, CA.

  • ABV: 18% (36 proof)
  • Size: 750mL
  • Base wine: estate Macabeo and Xarel-lo — Macabeo chosen for structure and neutrality so the botanicals show
  • Aging: 9–12 months in 1960s chestnut barrels/boots (formerly wine-transport barrels, some ex-sherry)
  • Origin: Bràfim, Tarragona, Spain — 5th-generation vermouth makers since 1886; Padró & Co. premium line launched 2016

Five Generations of Tarragona Vermouth

The Padró family has made vermouth in the village of Bràfim since 1886, surviving vermouth's booms and busts by growing their own wine — about 100 acres of roughly 25-year-old vines. The family's view is that vermouth making "is not an exact science": the base wine rests through its first winter, the sugar and herb formula are added, and the wine is then tasted continuously "like a good chef" until it is right. Rojo Clásico is a tribute to the traditional red vermouth once sold in the old wine-office cellars — expressive sweet spices (cinnamon, cloves), candied fruit, and a creamy palate with a slightly bitter herbal finish. Imported by Preiss Imports; it took Gold at the 2018 Beverage Testing Institute. Explore Padró & Co. or browse the wine and vermouth collection.

Tasting Notes

Expressive nose of sweet spices — cinnamon and cloves — over candied fruit. Creamy and fresh on the palate, with the herbal formula showing as slightly bitter Mediterranean herbs on the finish.

How to Enjoy

The importer's classic serve: a large ice cube and an olive — Spanish vermut-bar style. It also works as a Negroni's sweet vermouth or as the base of the importer's "Bloody Vermut" cocktail build.
