Xiaman Mezcal is Oaxaca in a hand-painted bottle — 44% ABV, 750ml, an artisanal ensamble of wild Tepextate and mature Espadín agaves from the team behind Padre Azul tequila, crafted the old way in Santo Tomás de Arriba. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

  • ABV: 44% (88 proof)
  • Size: 750ml
  • Agave: Ensamble — 50% wild Tepextate (takes ~25 years to mature) + 50% mature Espadín
  • Production: Artisanal — underground pit-oven roast, tahona crush, open-wood fermentation, copper distillation; certified by the Mezcal Regulatory Council
  • Origin: Santo Tomás de Arriba, Oaxaca; launched 2019 by Austrian-born Hans-Peter Eder and Adriana Alvarez (Padre Azul)

The Mythical Traveler, Bottled

Xiaman — named for a mythical figure able to travel between heaven, earth and the underworld — pairs two agaves in equal parts: wild Tepextate for layered, papery complexity and mature Espadín for depth and rich aroma. The artisanal method never shortcuts: agaves roasted in an underground pit, crushed by mule-drawn tahona, fermented in open wood and distilled in copper. The bottle itself is a work of art — hand-painted, with a jaguar-head stopper beaded by Wixárika artisans, over thirteen hours of handwork per bottle.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Floral and honeyed, delicate smoke underneath. Palate: Rich and balanced — sweet baked apple, peppery heat, earthy minerality, the Tepextate's wild complexity over Espadín's familiar smokiness. Finish: A whisper of smoke, long and elegant.

How to Enjoy

A sipping mezcal, full stop — pour it neat at room temperature and let it open in the glass. In Mexico it is traditional alongside an orange slice with sal de gusano. Explore more artisanal mezcals at Del Mesa Liquor, or meet its sibling brand Padre Azul tequila — the gift set pairs both in minis.
