San Matias Gran Reserva Extra Anejo is a 40% ABV (80 proof) extra añejo made from 100% mature Blue Weber agave — aged 36 months (3 years) in French oak barrels at Casa San Matías (NOM 1103) in Los Altos de Jalisco, Mexico. Introduced in 1993, it was the world's first extra añejo, released more than a decade before extra añejo became an official tequila category in 2006. It comes in a 750mL bottle. The Original Extra Añejo

Before "extra añejo" existed on paper, San Matías was already making one. Gran Reserva launched in 1993 — thirteen years before Mexico formalized the category — and the profile is shaped by master distiller Rocío Rodríguez, one of Mexico's few female-led distilleries' guiding hands. Three years in French oak turns mature highland agave into something Cognac-adjacent: butter, ripe fruit, dark chocolate, toasted almond, and hazelnut on the nose; caramel, roasted agave, baking spice, and vanilla on the palate; a long warming finish of oak, praline, and white pepper. Tasting Notes

Butter, ripe fruit, dark chocolate, toasted almond, hazelnut, and rye bread crust on the nose; a silky palate of caramel, roasted agave, baking spice, and vanilla; long warming finish with oak, gentle sweetness, praline, and white pepper.

How to Enjoy

Neat, in a snifter, at room temperature — this is a contemplative pour, not a mixer. If cocktails are calling, treat it like a fine Cognac: a tequila Old Fashioned with demerara and chocolate bitters.
