Penfolds Bin 28 Shiraz
Penfolds Bin 28 Shiraz is the original — the first wine in Penfolds' iconic Bin range, made in 1959 and named for the Kalimna vineyard in the Barossa Valley. Today it's a multi-regional, multi-vineyard showcase of warm-climate Australian Shiraz: 100% Shiraz from McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Wrattonbully, matured 12 months in seasoned American oak hogsheads and bottled at 14.5% ABV. Ripe, robust and generously flavoured, it's the benchmark Barossa-style red. It's available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor, San Diego, CA.

The Original Bin
Before there was a Bin range, there was Bin 28. Originally sourced entirely from the famous Kalimna vineyard in the Barossa Valley (bought by Penfolds in 1945), it has grown into a multi-region blend while keeping its aim unchanged: showcase the ripe, voluptuous, full-blooded style of warm-climate Australian Shiraz. The Barossa is always well represented in the blend, and the seasoned — not new — American oak hogsheads keep fruit at the forefront. Tasting Notes
Per Penfolds: purple with a black core; classic dark aromatics of graphite, flint, char and black jelly bean over a Christmas-pudding lift; full and expansive on the palate with sweet mouthcoating tannins and balanced acidity. Expect blackberry and plum layered with aniseed, black liquorice, chocolate, espresso and fine structural tannins.
How to Enjoy
Decant for 30 minutes and serve at room temperature. Built for roast lamb, grilled steak and hard cheeses — or hold it; this wine ages gracefully for a decade-plus.
