El Tequileño 'The Sassenach Select' Double Wood Reposado Tequila is a limited-edition collaboration between El Tequileño's third-generation master distiller Antonio Salles and Sam Heughan — the Outlander actor and founder of Sassenach Spirits — 84 proof (42% ABV) in 750mL. The reposado spends two full years in American oak, then finishes four months in French oak barrels: a double-wood treatment that bridges the highlands of Jalisco and the whisky traditions of Scotland. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor, San Diego, CA.

  • ABV: 42% (84 proof)
  • Size: 750mL
  • Aging: 2 years American oak + 4 months French oak (double wood)
  • Distillery: El Tequileño, NOM 1108, Jalisco Highlands — autoclaves, open fermentation, copper pot stills, pipones; volcanic spring water from the Volcán de Tequila
  • Agave: 100% blue Weber agave, highlands; 100% additive-free, Tequila Matchmaker-verified
  • Release: small-batch limited edition

When Great Whisky Meets Great Tequila

The pitch writes itself — Heughan's Sassenach Spirits brings the Scotch-blending mindset, Salles brings one of Jalisco's most traditional distilleries — but the liquid backs it up: two years of American oak is already past the reposado minimum by a mile, and the French-oak finish adds the kind of spice and structure tequila drinkers rarely get. The tasting notes read like a whisky review in the best way: cooked agave and honey giving way to toasted oak, baking spice, and salted caramel, with a lasting, spicy, creamy finish.

Tasting Notes

Nose of cooked agave, honey, toasted oak, and black pepper (vanilla, light caramel, citrus per other retailers); a rich, layered palate of whiskey character, toasted oak, cooked agave, baking spices, and salted caramel — caramel popcorn and herbal notes per Rare Tequilas; a lasting, spicy finish with a touch of cream.

How to Enjoy

Neat or over a single large cube to let the double wood open up — or build the elevated Old Fashioned the brand copy recommends. Compare it with other aged expressions on the tequila shelf, and see the rest of the El Tequileño range.
