Glenmorangie, under Dr Bill Lumsden, invented the entire "extra maturation" concept, and this was one of its earliest, most delicate experiments. The fino influence is unmistakable and beautifully dry: lightly caramel and winey on the nose with cream crackers and soft brine; a fuller, creamy palate with complex spice and a chocolate-liqueur note; and a long, chocolatey, gently smoky, salty finish with a prickling dryness. Among Scotch whiskies, this is the one Glenmorangie completists and sherry-cask devotees hunt — long discontinued, it survives only as a second-market bottle. Distilled at Scotland's tallest stills (5.14 metres, the height of a giraffe) in Tain, Ross-shire. Neat.
