A Roussillon Rancio From the Sapéras Family's Final Cuvée

Tresmontaine was the personal rancio of winemaker Bernard Sapéras of Domaine Vial-Magnères — his last dry rancio, kept mostly for family and friends and bottled for Soloton Selections by his son Olivier and the family. The wine ferments slowly in old casks over several years, then rests in barrels that previously held the domaine's Banyuls blanc, picking up the deep oxidative walnut-leather character that defines rancio sec. Browse the Tresmontaine range, or explore other fortified and oxidative wines in the cellar.

Tasting Notes

Walnut and dried orange peel over leather and baked stone fruit, bone-dry and concentrated from the slow evaporation of long oxidative aging. Savory, nutty, and endlessly long — a contemplative aperitif or digestif.

How to Enjoy

Serve cool in a small glass as an aperitif or after dinner alongside walnuts, aged cheeses, or dark chocolate. As an oxidatively aged wine it is shelf-stable once opened — no rush to finish the bottle.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "rancio sec" mean?
Rancio sec is Roussillon's dry, oxidatively aged wine — fermented to dryness, then matured for years in partially-filled barrels where slow oxidation builds walnut, leather, and dried-fruit character.

Is Tresmontaine Puits Aux Souhaits sweet?
No — it is fermented to dryness. The richness comes from age and oxidation, not residual sugar.

How long does it keep after opening?
Being fully oxidized already, it is shelf-stable after opening and keeps for weeks.

What grapes are used?
100% Grenache noir from ~70-year-old vines, per the US importer. Some retailer copy mentions Grenache gris, but that is unverified by the importer.
