Campante Mezcal Joven
Campante Mezcal Joven is an 80-proof (40% ABV) ensamble mezcal from Ejutla, Oaxaca — Espadin and Barril agaves (A. angustifolia and A. karwinskii) cooked, fermented, and distilled together by Mezcalera Raul Rodriguez Reyes, then bottled unaged as a Joven. Ensambles aren't blends after the fact: the two agaves go through the whole traditional process side by side — earthen-pit roasting, tahona crush, wooden-vat fermentation, double distillation in copper — so what you taste is one spirit that two plants built. A 2021 NY International Spirits Competition silver medalist, this 750mL bottle is wild-agave mezcal at an honest price. Order it online at Del Mesa Liquor, San Diego, CA.

Two Agaves, One Spirit
Espadin brings the sweet, approachable backbone; Barril — a wilder, more fibrous karwinskii — brings earth and structure. Cooked together in an earthen pit, crushed by tahona stone wheel, fermented in wooden vats with wild yeasts, and distilled twice in copper, the two agaves integrate into something neither could be alone. It's the traditional Oaxacan way of making ensamble, and it drinks like it. Find more ensamble bottlings in our mezcal collection or see the Campante range.
Tasting Notes
Roasted agave and sweet smoke up front, with earthy Barril character — damp stone, wild herbs — underneath the Espadin's honeyed fruit. Clean copper-distilled edges and a long, savory-sweet finish.
How to Enjoy
Neat at room temperature in a copita — chilling mutes the wild agave character. Orange slices and sal de gusano on the side if you're feeling traditional.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an ensamble mezcal?
A mezcal made from two or more agave species cooked, fermented, and distilled together — as opposed to a blend mixed after distillation.
What's the difference between Espadin and Barril agave?
Espadin is the cultivated workhorse of mezcal — sweet and reliable. Barril is a wild karwinskii variety, earthier and more fibrous, adding structure and wild character.
How should mezcal joven be served?
Neat, at room temperature, in a copita or small clay cup — sipped slowly, never shot.
